Fire safety took precedence at Lynwood Elementary School as students participated in fire prevention-week activities this October, including an informative assembly presented by members of the Farmingville Fire Department.
During the assembly, students enjoyed multiple demonstrations by the firefighters, learned essential safety tips for emergency situations and witnessed the rescue capabilities of the department. Students watched a vehicle extrication scenario as well as multiple firefighters rappelling from the department’s ladder truck from a height of approximately 100 feet. Firefighters taught students how to safely exit from a burning structure and the importance of developing a meeting point in a safe location outside their home in case of a fire.
At the conclusion of the demonstrations, students were given time to explore the various apparatuses and ask firefighters questions about their experiences as members of the fire department.
Throughout the district, local departments will visit the schools to educate students on best practices in emergency situations.
