For the last two years, I ran a coat drive out of my home. This year, as a Sagamore 6th grade student, I ran the coat drive at Sagamore, and it was an awesome feeling! I worked with Student Government which helped me to collect the coats at school. To know my peers were able to help local children in need by donating their coats made me feel a real sense of community. Together we were able to give warm coats to over 300 children and adults. We delivered them to the Boys and Girls Club of Suffolk and the Lighthouse Mission.
It is a special kind of feeling when you pull up to a donation site in the pouring rain and you see 75-100 people waiting for warm clothing and food. The coat drive for me was part of over 100 volunteer hours of community service to my local community, which I plan to continue through high school. I’m so glad that Sagamore’s Student Government allowed me to run this coat drive, and I hope to gather coats again next year!
