Students at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in second, third, fourth and fifth grade recently participated in a hands-on activity utilizing the coding website Scratch as part of a lesson during the weeklong Hour of Code initiative.

Led by library media specialist Louann Cronin, students worked independently using laptops to explore the vast coding capabilities of the website. Students coded motion, sound, appearance and setting for a scene that incorporated a character of their choosing. The activity allowed students in fourth and fifth grade to improve upon the skills they have learned participating in similar activities in the past.

In addition, first grade students were introduced to the coding program Kodable to establish introductory coding skills before participating in more advanced lessons in the future.
